Custom Picture Frame Tips

While regular picture frames will work fine for some purposes, there are certain occasions when nothing less than a custom picture frame will do. When you find one of those moments in your life it’s important to understand the proper way to go about ordering and purchasing a custom picture frame so that your frame will be just as beautiful and special as your important, once in a lifetime memory.

One of the most important things you can do when ordering a custom picture frame is to insure that the person you are ordering it from fully understands what you envision. You need to carefully explain exactly what kind of design you’re looking for as well as help them to understand what color elements your décor may already include. Whenever possible, be sure to bring in color swatches or examples of other items that are included in your décor. This will help to ensure the best match possible of both style and color. Keep in mind that the right custom frame designer is interested in producing a masterpiece that will make you happy. If the designer you’re working with does not seem interested in helping you strike the right balance, it’s time to find another designer.

Also make certain when you are explaining your preferences to the designer that they understand whether you wish to have your artwork cropped or not. If you do not specifically state your preferences on this matter, you may unfortunately find out later that your precious photograph or artwork has been altered. This is your responsibility to communicate this information; do not make any assumptions on this point.

When you bring in your artwork or photograph for a first consultation, make a point to ask if the designer handles the work themselves or if the framing is outsourced. If the framing is outsourced, you may have room for concern. It’s not only possible that the workmanship may turn out to be shoddy, but if not does meet your satisfaction or there is a problem with it, you may find that it’s difficult to have the problem corrected. In addition, outsourcing usually means that your artwork or photograph will be shipped; which increases the chance of it either becoming damaged or lost. Finally, outsourcing can lead to delays; at a very minimum.

If you’re not sure of the type of frame and design you want, be sure to ask to see examples and samples. Many designers display mock-ups in their shops that can provide some great idea to get you started.

Before making your final decision regarding a framer, be sure to inspect the quality of the materials the designer uses. If the materials they use are no better than what you would find on the rack at the local craft store, you could end up overpaying for poor quality materials that will do nothing to enhance or protect your memories.

Finally, remember that custom framing is typically not the cheapest route to go; however, if you are looking for specialty frames or a way to preserve an important piece of art or memorabilia, custom framing is the best way to handle the better. It’s an investment in your memories that you will enjoy for many years to come.
